House extension in conservation area

This small house extension in Heaton Moor conservation area, Stockport, had a simple but tricky brief. The house had a fabulous garden but limited visual or physical links to it. There was a level change to negotiate. The house was a good size and didn’t need much more space. Whilst the period features of the existing house were liked, the clients were keen to use the opportunity to do something contemporary on any new addition. Solve all these on a modest budget.
Our answer was this small extension sat in the garden. We’re really pleased with it but more importantly our clients were really pleased with it.
Rather than external steps we brought the level change inside and used it to add drama with an extra tall space.
Improving the view out from the galley kitchen was critical and glazing was carefully considered to achieve this. We explored various suppliers to maximise the door heights to facilitate this whilst keeping within affordable glazing system.
A frameless glazed corner really allows you to feel like you are part of the garden whilst being inside.
